In a deeply distressing case from Desura village in Belgaum district, 77-year-old Balavva Gowdar was sent to an old age home by her son, Baswant Gowdar, a junior engineer with KSRTC. After losing her husband when Baswant was just four years old, Balavva single-handedly raised him, providing him with an education and securing his government job through her late husband’s employment benefits. However, after marriage, Baswant allegedly abandoned his mother, taking her 120 grams of gold and 10 acres of land.
Balavva now resides in an old age home after being cast out by her son and daughter-in-law. Once living a life of dignity, she now depends on the shelter for survival. Despite the betrayal, she harbors no ill will toward her son and hopes for his well-being.
Relatives reportedly tried to intervene and convince Baswant to care for his mother, but their efforts were in vain. In the meantime, Balavva spends her days chanting prayers at the old age home, reflecting on her situation. The incident has drawn widespread outrage, with many condemning the son’s actions and expressing dismay at the plight of neglected parents.
Balavva’s story highlights the painful reality faced by some elderly parents, even as societal norms call for honoring and caring for them. Her case is a stark reminder of the responsibilities children owe to those who sacrificed everything for their upbringing.
