The Belagavi City Corporation (BCC) has introduced mandatory waste segregation for all households, requiring residents to classify waste into wet, dry, and hazardous categories before handing it over to municipal staff. Non-compliance will attract fines ranging from ₹500 to ₹5,000.
To promote awareness, the BCC has been urging residents to adopt the use of separate bins. Once collected, the waste is sent to designated sorting facilities for further processing. Although color-coded bins were previously distributed, enforcement had remained inconsistent until now.
Following a comprehensive inspection, the commissioner directed strict implementation of the segregation rules. The initiative has already achieved 70% compliance, with fines now being imposed on violators. Awareness campaigns, including posters and public announcements, are being employed to encourage broader participation.
