The ongoing Territorial Army (TA) recruitment rally at Belagavi’s Rashtriya Military Ground, scheduled to run until November 16, 2024, has laid bare serious lapses in planning and crowd control, leaving thousands of eager applicants frustrated and disappointed. Candidates from Telangana, Goa, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, and Union Territories like Pondicherry, Lakshadweep, Daman and Diu, and Dadra and Nagar Haveli arrived with hopes of serving the nation. However, the rally’s chaotic management has left many questioning if this is how the future defenders of the country should be treated.
With over 30,000 hopefuls from 16 districts, including Belagavi, Bagalkote, and Dharwad—many from economically disadvantaged backgrounds—the lack of adequate support has been glaring. Young men and women, many of whom have traveled long distances with limited funds for food and shelter, have been met with severe overcrowding. The disorganization led to a stampede outside the Belagavi CPeD Ground, prompting police to use lathis to disperse the crowd, further frustrating these aspirants who came with dreams of military service.
Despite aggressive crowd control efforts, chaos persisted until army and police personnel managed to organize the applicants. Initially, height tests were conducted on Club Road before candidates were directed to the National Military School ground for further physical evaluations. This disjointed process has raised concerns about the rally’s overall management, leaving many young people weary and disheartened.
Given the scale of the event, collaboration between the Army, district administration, and NGOs is essential to provide necessary amenities like food and shelter for these candidates. Many of them come from financially vulnerable backgrounds, and immediate support is needed to ensure their well-being. What should have been an inspiring recruitment drive has instead left these young patriots feeling overlooked by the very system they aspire to protect.
