In a swift operation led by Khanapur ACF Sunita Nimbaragi, the forest department successfully apprehended members of a gang involved in smuggling porcupine meat, known as “shelled pork,” to China. The raid took place on Wednesday in Khanapur, resulting in the demolition of huts used by interstate poachers.
The gang was reportedly exporting porcupine meat, which is in demand in China for medicinal purposes. During the operation, forest officials disrupted the network responsible for hunting and transporting the porcupines from the Khanapur forest area. Two suspects were arrested, while two others managed to escape.
The gang had been acting suspiciously in Londa, a region within Khanapur taluk. In the course of the raid, the forest department also rescued a porcupine, and the two arrested individuals were taken into custody. A special team has been set up to track down the remaining two absconding suspects. The operation was supported by Londa RFO YP Tej and Khanapur RFO Srikanth Patil.
