The Belgaum City Corporation is set to undertake the sterilization of approximately 22,000 stray dogs in the city. Mayor Savita Kamble has directed officials to initiate tenders for the “Catch, Sterilize, and Release” campaign.
This matter was raised during a general body meeting of the city corporation on Saturday. Corporation council member Azim Patvegar voiced concerns about the large number of stray dogs wandering the streets, causing significant distress to residents, particularly children, senior citizens, and women. He also called for compensation to be provided to victims of dog bites.
Officials informed the council that a survey revealed over 22,000 stray dogs in the city, but only 4,831 have been sterilized so far.
Mayor Kamble instructed officials to expedite the tender process to ensure the sterilization drive is completed within two weeks. She also supported the establishment of a permanent team for ongoing operations and proposed relocating the center from Srinagar in Belgaum to the city’s outskirts.
Corporation council members Lakshmi Rathod, Shankar Patil, and Ravi Salunke criticized the slow pace of the sterilization teams and demanded daily reports on the procedures conducted.
MLA Asif (Raju) Sait emphasized the need to address the issue as a priority.
