Chief Minister Siddaramaiah arrived at Belagavi Sambra Airport on Monday, August 5, via special flight to assess the impact of floods and heavy rains. He toured Gokak and other areas affected by the Ghataprabha river floods, conducting inspections and reviewing the flood situation. Later, he visited Jugala village in Kagavad taluk and inspected the flood damage caused by the Krishna river. Accompanied by district ministers, MLAs, and officials, he concluded his visit to flood-affected regions before returning to Bangalore in the evening.
Dr. Shalini Rajneesh, formerly praised for her role as the District Collector of Belgaum, has now assumed the position of Chief Secretary of the State Government. Today, she made her inaugural visit to Belgaum in her new capacity, accompanying Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. Together, they surveyed the flood-affected areas and assessed the impact of heavy rains on the district.
The rainfall in Belgaum up to July 30 was recorded at 6.3 mm, significantly lower than expected. However, the subsequent rainfall surged to 110 mm, marking an excess of 110%. In the current monsoon season, total rainfall has reached 332 mm, which represents a 60% increase over the anticipated average of 208 mm. This intense rainfall has led to widespread flooding across many villages and thousands of acres of agricultural land in Belgaum district, caused by overflowing rivers including the Krishna, Ghataprabha, Malaprabha, Doodhganga, Vedaganga, Markandeya, and Hiranyakeshi.
As a result of these floods, 46 villages in the district have been inundated, affecting 10,304 people from 3,684 families. Many residents have evacuated their homes and sought refuge in 54 care centers established throughout the district. This response aims to provide shelter and support to those displaced by the rising waters, as communities continue to cope with the disruptions caused by the flooding.
