Conservationists from the city have restored an open well in the Military Camp vicinity of Belgaum. The well on Kondappa Street, which had been inactive for seventy years, was reopened to the public on Monday with the assistance of Lions Club members. The project was carried out by former Belgaum City Corporation chief engineer R.S. Nayak, an expert in rejuvenation, and conservationist Kiran Nippanikar.
Belgaum Lions, Lions of Tilakwadi, Belgaum Main, Midtown, and Khanapur provided assistance to the project. Cantonment Board CEO Rajeev Kumar and Lions Club officials were present at the inauguration event.
District Governor Erle Britto of 317B MJF Belgaum stated that this endeavor has not only revitalized a part of the city’s heritage but also guarantees water access for the nearby residents. Mr. Nippanikar noted that the well had been deemed inactive for nearly 35 years and had been ignored. He expressed gratitude to the members and officials of the relevant clubs.
