The Belgaum City Corporation (BCC) has initiated a groundbreaking project aiming to repurpose waste and contribute to waste reduction by addressing single-use plastic in garbage.
The road asphalting project, incorporating bitumen and plastic waste granules, was inaugurated on Tuesday by District Incharge and PWD Minister Satish Jarkiholi, Municipal Administration Minister Rahim Khan, and Belgaum North MLA Asif Sait in front of the Belgaum City Corporation building.
BCC intends to construct a trial road measuring 90 meters in length and 11 meters in width in front of its Ashok Nagar office in Belgaum. Should the trial project prove successful, BCC intends to implement this approach for constructing additional roads in the future
The utilization of plastic waste in road construction originated in Indore and has been extensively documented in numerous research papers. Despite the prohibition of single-use plastic bags with a thickness below 80 microns, they are still being employed for this purpose.
Incorporating plastic into the construction enhances the road’s lifespan to a minimum of ten years, nearly doubling the durability compared to a road made solely with bitumen.
