Following a series of recent unfortunate incidents, the authorities in Belagavi, Karnataka, have taken a significant step to ensure public safety. In light of these events, the administration and the police have implemented a ban on taking selfies in close proximity to the renowned Gokak waterfalls.
The selfie frenzy at Gokak waterfalls has resulted in several tragic deaths over the past few years. As the River Ghataprabha swells with the ongoing rains, the majestic Gokak waterfalls continue to captivate visitors with their breathtaking beauty.
The spot is attracting thousands of tourists from various regions, including neighboring states, who come to witness the awe-inspiring waterfalls stretching 581 feet wide, cascading into a 171-foot gorge. However, the surging number of visitors has posed a challenge for the local authorities and police to manage the crowd effectively.
Despite the alarming number of incidents where tourists have fallen into the gorge while attempting risky selfies at the waterfalls, the selfie craze shows no signs of abating. According to police department sources, an average of 12-15 people, including youths and women, meet their tragic end at Gokak waterfalls annually. Some of these deaths are accidental, while others are attributed to suicide at this popular tourist spot.
