A 27-year-old postgraduate medical student from Bengaluru was discovered dead in her hostel room at the Belagavi Institute of Medical Sciences (BIMS) on Monday night. Police suspect it to be a case of suicide.
The deceased, Priya, was pursuing her PG studies at BIMS and was reportedly under treatment for depression. Her hostel mates found her unresponsive in her room and rushed her to the Emergency and Trauma Centre, where doctors declared her dead.
Initial medical findings indicate that she may have overdosed on medication prescribed for her depression.
BIMS Director Dr. Ashok Kumar Shetty, who visited the trauma centre, said Priya had been on duty until 4:30 p.m. on Monday and the incident occurred after she returned to her hostel. He also confirmed that Priya had earlier attempted self-harm during her studies in Bengaluru, where she was treated for injuries caused by a blade.
APMC Police have filed a case of suspected suicide and are gathering statements from her friends, family, and colleagues to determine the circumstances.
The incident has left the BIMS community in shock, while mental health professionals reiterated the need for timely counseling and support for students facing stress and depression.
