Twenty women workers fell ill after inhaling thick smoke caused by a short circuit at a plastic manufacturing company located in the special economic zone under Hattargi gram panchayat in Hukkeri taluk of Belagavi district on Saturday.
According to sources, the short circuit caused heavy smoke inside the unit, leading to asphyxiation among the workers. The incident was first noticed on Saturday afternoon.
All 20 affected workers were initially given first aid on-site. Later, 10 women who complained of breathing difficulties were shifted to a private hospital in Belagavi for further treatment. Doctors said their condition is stable and they are out of danger.
Most of the women employed at the plastic unit hail from Hattargi, Yamakanamaradi, and nearby villages.
