The Karnataka government has approved the upgradation of the Arabavi–Lokapur Road, which connects Belagavi and Bagalkot districts. The 65-km stretch, running via Kulagod and Yadawad, will be upgraded into a two-lane State Highway at an estimated cost of ₹300 crore.
While no land acquisition will be required, the plan includes widening shoulders in select stretches, clearing bylanes, and constructing bypasses around towns.
The improved road is anticipated to enhance trade, tourism, and healthcare access, especially for residents in border villages seeking medical treatment in neighbouring districts.
“This route is key for our textile and vegetable trade. Reducing travel time will be a major advantage,” said Basavanneppa Chandaragi, a trader and weaver from Ghataprabha.
He sources foodgrains, fruits, and vegetables from Belagavi and sells them in Bagalkot, while transporting sarees, blouse fabrics, jowar rotis, and chutney powder from Bagalkot for resale in Belagavi.
“It takes nearly two hours to travel from Arabavi to Lokapur now. A better road could halve that,” he added.
The development is also expected to benefit villages along the route.
Public Works Minister Satish Jarkiholi confirmed that the work will commence shortly and is targeted for completion within six months.
